Merino Wool: Properties & Care Guide

Merinovillan ominaisuudet ja huolto

Soft, breathable and naturally temperature-regulating

Merino wool comes from Merino sheep, whose wool is known for its particularly fine and thin fibres. The 100% merino wool yarn used by Nakoa is mulesing-free.

Merino wool helps regulate body temperature: it keeps you warm in cooler conditions while also feeling comfortable in warmer weather. As a breathable and moisture-wicking material, it is well suited to year-round wear.

Key properties of merino wool:

  • Breathable and moisture-wicking

  • Naturally temperature-regulating

  • Soft and comfortable

  • Naturally refreshes when aired

  • Does not need frequent washing

How to care for merino wool

Merino wool needs surprisingly little washing. Air your knit after wearing it and only wash it when it really needs it. Regular, gentle brushing helps keep the knit looking neat and removes dust, dirt and loose fibres from the surface.

When washing is necessary, always follow the care instructions for the individual product. For hand washing, use a detergent suitable for wool and lukewarm water. Avoid rubbing or twisting the garment, as this can damage the wool fibres and cause the knit to felt.

After washing, gently remove excess water using a towel and dry the knit flat and reshaped. Avoid direct sunlight.

Wool care at a glance

1. Air it

Wool garments benefit from being aired between wears. This allows the natural elasticity of the wool fibres to recover and helps the garment return to its original shape. Slightly humid outdoor air or a bathroom are both suitable for airing wool.

2. Brush gently

Brushing removes dust, dirt, lint and loose fibres from the surface of the knit. It also smooths the fibres and helps prevent pilling. Fabric shavers are not recommended for fluffy knits.

3. Treat stains promptly

Treat stains as soon as possible. Avoid vigorous rubbing and use only cleaning products suitable for wool.

4. Wash only when necessary

In most cases, airing and brushing are enough. When washing is necessary, always follow the care instructions for the individual product.

5. Dry and store correctly

Dry wool knits flat and preferably store them folded. This helps the knit retain its shape. Especially thick and heavy knits should not be stored on hangers, as their weight can cause the garment to stretch.
